We have a Winner!

Image
Well done for Ashling for winning our Largest Tree in Shannon competition this Biodiversity week. In her own words:  "I measured the ‘big’ tree beside the pump house at the back of Drumgeely Ave….I used a 10ft measuring tape & a piece of garden twine…the tree trunk measured 2.87 meters…I’ve no idea how tall it is but it’s big. There are numerous trees on Drumgeely Hill that are nearly as old as the town to choose from but this one is the ‘big’ tree ☺️   " She'll be enjoying spending 20 euros on the wonderfully sustainable goods sold by Lana's on her stall in the Town Square this Thurs morning. Thanks for taking part Ashling and I'm glad you had fun! The piece of string worked well and I think it is an Ash tree. We will be adding that tree to the map on our homepage! https://sites.google.com/view/shannontowntidytowns

Biodiversity Week competition: Time is running out to find Shannon' largest tree!

Lana's Thurs veg and jam stall was looking lovely this morning in the Shannon Town square so don't miss out on winning a 20 euro voucher to use in her stall by finding Shannon's largest tree! Just e-mail location and girth to snntt57@gmail.com. See this post for more details: https://shannontidytowns.blogspot.com/2023/05/biggest-tree-in-shannon-town-competition.html

Large brick planter at junction of Bóthar na Lóiste and Bóthar Mór had rocks removed and more soil added.

Image
Derek and Tony W removed the rocks from this bed and added more top soil. Added added this stone planter to the active map at:  https://sites.google.com/view/shannontowntidytowns/home

Weeded the planters and ground around the Carraig Lia sign

Image
Derek hedge trimmed and strimmed and Tony W helped with the clearing up and weeding :) We also got some more soil to dress the planters. Both planters still have their daffodil bulbs in. And this is now on our active map at: https://sites.google.com/view/shannontowntidytowns/home

Dr Green's Hill's planter has been weeded and planted :)

Just noticed this morning when I walked by :)

We need to repair one of our Biodiversity signs

Image
Looks like nature has had its way with our plywood sign. Nothing that cannot be easily repaired and a bit of a clean to the sign itself :) But look at how well the wild meadow is developing behind it. Right next to St Conaires NS so the children get top enjoy it every day :)

Biggest Tree in Shannon Town Competition

Image
Biggest Tree in Shannon Town Competition For Biodiversity Week 2023 (starting Friday 19th May to Sunday 28th May) we invite everybody to take part in a competition to find the largest tree in Shannon Town Take a measurement around the trunk and e-mail it to  snntt57@gmail.com with your name, photos and location (please include the word TREE in the subject) and we will look through all the entries and announce the winner on Mon 29th May. The winner will receive a 20 euro gift token for the plants/vegetables. Extra marks for estimating the height of the tree and giving its species. Please share your calculations! Have fun! For example, there's an ash (with die-back) in Tola Park which has a girth of 53 inches. Using GoogleMaps.com I can get its exact location 52.70950035609362, -8.88621850576728 (just right click on it) Then using a tape measure I get its girth (53" or 135 cm) Then for the craic using my arm as a home made sextant I can get it's height.. Since from 1...

A hidden planter at Dr Green's Hill!

Tony W noticed this planter that we missed weeding the other day. Must do it soon! So it has been added it to our active map at: https://sites.google.com/view/shannontowntidytowns/home

Prepared planters for new plants

Image
Tony W, Andy and Rose helped remove weeds with the ground strimmed ready for new plants shortly. We started at Cluain Airne / Geraldine's Way where there is one large planter and three small ones. We then went to the planters near Inis Beag / Sli Na Mara opposite scrub area beside Saint Conaire's National School to weed three planters and a brick raised bed. Next Tony W and Andy went to Tullyvarraga Crescent to weed that planter.. ..before joining the others at Tullyglass Hill to weed that planter. In all 4 people worked for 2.5 hours from 2 pm and collected 2 bags of weeds :) And added these four planter locations to the active map at: https://sites.google.com/view/shannontowntidytowns/home
